As always, the first major save I’ve done on FM19 is Lyon. Since my first foray into the modern Football Manager games I’ve chosen to play as Lyon and so far, this save has been one of the most successful ever. I’ve already made my way into my third season now, so my first couple of posts will be recaps, before getting into real time updates of how the save is going.
Picking up the Lyon job as the first job in the career, you always get the usual experience questions from the media. Fortunately, the squad don’t seem to have the same issue and responded well to me straight away. There are a number of exceptional young prospects in the Lyon first team; Houssem Auoar, Tanguy N’Dombele, Moussa Dembele, Maxwel Cornet and Amine Gouiri being the main players in this regard. This helped my cause massively, as the primary request from my board was to develop youth players.
I replaced my older full-backs Rafael and Marcal with Ayrton Lucas and Alexis Saelemakers – both high potential youngsters – mainly as the older guys had wanted to leave after receiving bids for them (Marcal for Alexis in January). I tried a few times to get in higher profile defensive players but had a hard time attracting anyone of a large improvement level. I landed on Leipzig’s Willi Orban as a happy medium of first team quality and potential to still improve a little.
The main signing of the first season was Olivier Ntcham. I was looking to play with 3 central midfielders, and wanted another top quality option to rotate between. £15 million (rising to £20 million) ended up being an absolute steal.
